A key look coming through on the Pre Fall 23 catwalk is Archive Ethnics, a new take on Japanese shibori and Indonesian style batik designs. The traditional ethnic looks have been revamped with bold contemporary colour palettes.
Ulla Johnson's collection is vibrant with hot pinks, bright orange and fresh greens. The prints are graphic and over sized. The collection is a combination of interesting shibori techniques combined with beautiful detailed batik designs. Joanna Ortiz pre fall 23 collection also uses a vibrant colour palette mixing quirky ethnic motifs with tropical elements.
Deep indigo blue is still a strong colour palette for this look, showing off traditional shibori patterns and inky style strips like the Altuzarra design from SS23. Joanna Ortiz collection modernises traditional southwest patterns.
We're seeing the ethnic trend in a more neutral palette as well, with the combination of tan and navy. Ulla Johnson's collection has also added highlights of corals and turquoise, giving the neutral colour way a fresh look. The softer tie dye prints are sophisticated and feminine.
Christian Dior's pre fall 23 collection has a rich decadent take on ethnic design, the colours are vivid and intense. The patterns have been simplified giving them a bold graphic look, combined with more detailed scenic imagery. The designs have an interior style feel to them, modernised by the vibrant colour way.
